2010 Platform
In reading my 2006 Campaign Platform Brochure, I am proud to see how much of it remains relevant today. It is also gratifying to see how much of it that I can say has been achieved like the new Seniors residence on King Road and the new Ball Hockey and Skate Board Park beside the King City Lions’ Arena that is to start construction this fall thanks to the initiative and cash donation of the King City Lion’s as well as the cash donations of Shoppers Drug Mart and Brook Valley Developments.
And although not everyone is satisfied with the new Shoppers Drug Mart on King Road, I know that I had a very positive influence on the finishing of that building to help set a strong standard for new development and enhancement of our downtown core.
In my last campaign, I coined the slogan “Protect, Preserve, Enhance”. This is more of a mantra than anything and is always at the forefront of my mind in every decision I have to make. It is an ideal, not always achievable to the degree we might want, but an ideal to be always upheld. I believe we must continue to…
Protect
…our greenspaces …our nature trails …our natural wildlife habitats
Some of King Township’s finest features are its wide-open spaces and rolling landscapes. It is home to many species of wildlife, some of which are seriously threatened by the increasing loss of natural habitat.
Preserve
…our feeling of community …our historical heritage …our cultural assets
Did you know that a massive artwork – created by an internationally renowned artist – exists in King City? “Shift”, created by Richard Serra, was built in 1971 in a field behind Burton Grove, on land that is currently owned by a developer. It is currently in the process of Heritage Designation.
Enhance
…our roads and infrastructure …our recreational facilities …King City’s downtown core …the businesses serving residents of King
Improvements in pedestrian safety and the implementation of King Township’s Village Design Guidelines will make King a safer, more desirable place to live, benefiting residents and local business owners alike.
And now for an extension of that Mantra… “Build, Rebuild, Create”
Build …a positive, mutually beneficial relationship with Seneca College. Rebuild …our Downtown Core into a place where people can meet, work, eat, and shop. Create …more recreational & cultural opportunities for our growing population.
We need to get past the dark days of the sewer implementation. We need to take advantage of the benefits that can be realized by nurturing relationships with one of the biggest most successful educational institutions in Canada – Seneca College. I truly believe that their growth, along with Township assistance can do nothing but improve opportunities for Ward 1 and Ward 5 residents. And along with the growth that has already started, we must take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself to Build, Rebuild and Create a renewed village that supports business, that serves the residents that live here and that hosts an annual village fair.
We are the only Village in this Township with no annual fair. Once upon a time, the annual Lion’s Auction was the event that attracted many people from across the Region to look for that great bargain and enjoy some food, drinks and camaraderie in the crisp October air. Once upon a time we had the King City Septemberfest that only lasted a few years.
We need our own, made in King City cultural fair. Something that truly befits the largest urban centre in King Township. KingFest had started something really great. We need to restart that, or kick start something new and fresh that will stand the test of time, and I want to encourage and help our community organizations bring this to life.
